I’m the only thing my mother ever made. I come to this realization when I have my own children and she has chastised me again for not calling each day. I’m sure my mother never thought that after she’d reached sixty, the tables would turn and she’d be running after me. I am wary of the phone—maybe it was all those years in the ’90s when I spent countless hours with the receiver glued to my ear. Now, when I head home after the day’s never-ending yammer, I just want peace. I understand that this, too, is a ridiculous longing because I live with a teenager who sings loudly enough to drown out the music Alexa sends blasting into our bathroom almost constantly. So by peace, I can’t mean quiet, just a bit of time to and for myself.

My mother brought an only child into the world and suffers the consequences. Who knew as I approached forty I’d be so desperate for every piece of myself I could strangle away from others. I want to spend my whole life being a good daughter, as she has spent most of her life being a wonderful mother. But she’s taught me to live how I want to live, so I call less and take the chiding when she scolds me about spending all my time with another.
